Neu! '75 is the third and most essential record from Krautrock wunderkinds Neu!- a two-man experimental force that pioneered the rapid, repetitive drum-beat known as motorik, and mapped out the future of music for groups like Sonic Youth, Stereolab, and Spacemen 3. Recorded after a two-year moratorium on the Neu! design, 75 is the sound of a band in a state of disintegration but it's the simmering tension between the ambient-minded Michael Rother and the fiery Klaus Dinger that makes this an artistic triumph, rather than a cacophonous dissolution of ideas. Neu! handle this fracture by effectively splitting 75 in two very different parts. The first half, featuring the drifting catatonic majesty of "Seeland" and the tidal ambient lull of "Leb' Wohl" is very recognizably led by Rother's sense of affecting minimalism. The second half, however, is Dinger's blank canvas, over which he bitterly vents his spleen: "Hero" surges forward on an aggressive pedal-to-the-metal wave of guitar, Dinger bellowing "The only crime is money" like an anarchist sloganeer. Suddenly, claims that this record was an influence on the young John Lydon make perfect sense - 'Neu! '75' is a masterpiece of cosmic punk rock, beamed in from a time before punk rock even existed...

The term "classic hardcore punk album" must be one of the most overused phrases, but in the case of the Spermbirds legendary debut album from 1986, its more than valid. Hailing from Kaiserslauten and featuring ex US serviceman Lee Hollis on vocals, the debut Spermbirds album was fast and furious punk rock influenced by US hardcore bands such as Black Flag, 7 Seconds and Angry Samoans. Mainland Europe's most successful hardcore band are still going strong 20 years on, and "Something To Prove" remains the starting point / first port of call to anyone checking out the band....

This deejay, producer, and Opera House label owner infuses his melodies and chorus lines with famous opera arias, but it's no mere shtick, à la Sean Combs's pop "pufferies." Buccaneer's tracks testify to an elastic and bold musical imagination, and his boombastic chesty resonance and perfectly pitched, stretched-out notes are not that far off from, say, those of the baritone's understudy in a community theater production of La Bohème. All that, plus an inner metronome to guide Buccaneer's rhythmically intricate flow and the well-sharpened sense of humor that birthed this musical blend, put the patwah Pavarotti way ahead of the pack. Not that this album is all about dancehall meets opera; traces of rock, ska, and whatever else bounces are part of one of the best reggae albums of '98. Buccaneer's "big 'bout" Jamaica, but he's clearly no one-hit wonder or deejay of a season. While everyone's got their money on Beenie Man as reggae's top contender for the international pop music sweepstakes, this singular artist is another pretty safe bet...

When the Descendents finally ended their first run as an on-again/off-again pop-punk band in 1987, a pair of live albums (Liveage and Hallraker) was compiled by their only constant member, founding drummer Bill Stevenson. As Stevenson writes in the liner notes for Hallraker, Liveage was meant to "serve as a sort of 'greatest-hits' album," but too many tracks were left out, so a second LP was released, "at the request of fans"...
